1.4-Butanediol Instruction:

1.4-Butanediol is an important raw material for the production of spandex, plastics, elastomers and films. BDO is used as a base material as well as a starting material for other SA derivatives such as THF and GBL. THF is produced from 1,4-DO in the presence of phosphoric acid under high temperature conditions. Figure 5 shows five known chemical processes for producing 1,4-PDO. Reppe chemistry was one of the first technologies to produce 1,4-butanediol from acetylene and formaldehyde.


BDO Description:

1.4-Butanediol is a chemical. BDO is used in industry to make floor strippers, paint thinners and other solvent products. BDO is sometimes used in health products as a substitute for illegal substances such as gamma-lactone (GBL) and gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB).

1,4-Butanediol (1,4-BDO) is a four-carbon diol used in industrial applications such as organic solvents, and in the production of adhesives, fibers and polyurethanes. Currently, 1,4-BDO is produced by several petrochemical routes: hydrogenation of maleic anhydride, isomerization of propylene oxide, acetoxylation of butadiene, and the reaction of formaldehyde and acetylene. The current trend in 1,4-PDO production involves the use of renewable resources, such as biomass.

BDO Applications:

1,4-Butanediol has a wide range of uses. More than half is used in the United States and Western Europe for the production of tetrahydrofuran, followed by γ-butyrolactone and polybutylene terephthalate, the latter being a fast-growing engineering plastic; 1,4-butanediol is used as a chain extender and polyester feedstock for the production of polyurethane elastomers and flexible polyurethane foam; esters prepared from 1,4-butanediol are good plasticizers for cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylates, and polyesters.

1,4-Butanediol has good hygroscopic flexibility and can be used as a plasticizer and absorbent for gelatin, as a processing aid for cellophane and other unused papers. BDO can also prepare N-methylpyrrolidone, N-vinylpyrrolidone, and other pyrrolidone derivatives, also used in the production of vitamin B6, pesticides, herbicides, and the role of a variety of process solvents, lubricants, wetting agents, softeners, adhesives, and intermediates in the electroplating industry: bleaching agents, solvents, wetting agents, plasticizers. Production of high-elasticity polyurethane crosslinking agents, organic synthesis. Can prepare N-methylpyrrolidone, N-vinylpyrrolidone and other pyrrolidone derivatives, also used in the production of vitamin B6, pesticides, herbicides.

BDO is a high value-added organic chemical base material that has a very wide application in fine chemistry. BDO can be used to produce tetrahydrofuran (TH-F), γ-butyrolactone (GBL), N-methylpyrrolidone and individual ethylpyrrolidone, and is also an important raw material for the production of poly(dibutylterephthalate) (PBT) and highly functional polyester engineering plastics, elastic fibers, polyester polyol and polytetramethylene glycol ether (PTMEG), polyurethane synthetic leather, thermoplastic rubber, adhesives, and pharmaceutical products. It can also be used as a chain extender for polyurethane, unsaturated polyester resin, etc.
