GBL (Gamma butyrolactone)

GBL (Gamma butyrolactone) Introduction:

GBL (gamma butyrolactone) is a colorless oily liquid, miscible with water and the general organic, slightly soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. GBL has been characterized as having an intense bitter taste with faint to pleasant odor.
Gamma-Butyrolactone has widespread industrial use. γ-butyrolactone is a common solvent found in paint strippers, nail polish removers, stain removers and circuit board cleaners. Gamma-Butyrolactone is also a common intermediate in industrial chemistry including the manufacture of pyrrolidones and in some pharmaceuticals.

First-aid Measures of GBL:

Skin contact: Flush with soap and water.
Eye contact: Lift up the eyelid, flush thoroughly for at least 20 minutes with a plenty of flowing water or normal saline. If still feeling irritated within 15 minutes, go to see the doctor.
Inhalation: If inhaled, move the patient to a fresh air place. If the patient does not breathe or has difficulty in breathing, artificial respiration or oxygen therapy shall be performed by the trained persons. Go to see the doctor.
Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Use 1-2 cups of water or milk to dilute slowly, and go to see the doctor. Do not feed anything to the mouth of the person who has lost his consciousness.

GBL Firefighting Measures:

Hazardous properties: When its gaseous state contacts the air, explosive mixture can form. It is flammable in case of presence of open fire and high temperature, and not compatible with strong acid, strong alkaline, strong oxidant and strong reducing agent.
Harmful combustion products: CO, CO2
Fire extinguishing method: Use water to spray onto the escaping liquid to have it diluted into a non-combustible mixture, and use the foggy water to protect the firefighting personnel. Fire extinguishing agent: water, foggy water, anti-soluble foam, dry powder, CO2, sandy soil.
Points of attention and measures for fire extinguishing: The firefighting personnel shall wear gas masks, whole body fire suits, and perform the fire extinguishing in the upwind direction. Move as far as possible the vessels to an open place from fire ground. Spray the water to keep cooled the vessels in the fire ground until fire extinguishing is ended. If any of the vessels in the fire ground has changed its color, or any sound occurs from the safety relief device, personnel must be evacuated immediately.

Emergency Treatment of Leakage:

Emergency treatment: Evacuate rapidly the personnel in the leakage-polluted area to a safe area, have them isolated, and restrict strictly their access. Cut off as far as possible the leaking sources to prevent it flowing into the restrictive spaces, such as, sewers, flood water drainage channel and etc. For small leakage: Adsorb or absorb it with sandy soil or other incombustible materials. You may also flush it with a plenty of water, and drain the flushing water into the wastewater system after having been diluted. For large leakage: Collect it by building a cofferdam, or digging a pit.
In case of fire, cut off the fire sources, suggest that the emergency treatment personnel wear the self-contained positive pressure respirators, enter into the site in the upwind direction. Cover the leakage with foam to reduce the vapor hazard. Use foggy water to cool down and dilute the steam, protect the site personnel, dilute the leaking materials into incombustible substances. Use a pump to transfer the leaking materials to a tank car or a special collector for recovery or send it to the wastes disposal site for disposal.

Operation Disposal and Storage:

Points of attention for operation:

Closed operation. The operators must be especially trained, and shall abide by strictly the operating procedures. Keep away from the fire sources and heat sources, and smoking is forbidden in the work place. Use the explosion-proof ventilation system and equipment. Prevent the vapor leaking into the air at the work place. Avoid getting in touch with strong oxidant, strong reducing agent, acids and alkaline. Handle with care during handling, and prevent the packages and vessels from being damaged. Provide the corresponding varieties and quantities of firefighting equipment as well as the equipment for leakage emergency treatment.

Points of attention for storage:

Store in a cool and well-ventilated warehouse. Keep away from the fire sources and heat sources. Store separately with strong oxidants, strong reducing agents, acids, alkaline and edible chemicals, do not mix them in the storage. Provide the corresponding varieties and quantities of firefighting equipment. The equipment for leakage emergency treatment as well as suitable collecting materials shall be made available in the storage area.

Exposure Control / Individual Protection:

Occupational exposure limits (OEL): No data available.
Engineering control: To be enclosed strictly, provide sufficient partial air exhaust. Provide safety showers and eyewash equipment.
Protection of respiratory system: To be used in a well-ventilated place.
Eye protection: Chemical protection glasses; in case there is any splashing danger, please also put on masks.
Body protection: Put on the waterproof gloves made of natural rubber or chloroprene rubber.
Other protections: Smoking, eating and drinking are forbidden at the work place. When the work is completed, carry out cleaning thoroughly. Pay attention to personal cleanness and hygiene. Carry out the pre-employment and periodical physical check-ups. When entering the tanks, restrictive spaces or other areas with high concentration for operation, there must be personnel made available for doing custody.

Stability and Reactivity:

Stability: Stable under the normal handling, service and transport conditions.
Polymerization hazard: Will not occur.
Forbidden compounds: Strong acid, strong alkaline, strong oxidant and strong reducing agent.
Combustion (decomposition) products: CO, CO2.

Toxicological Information:

Acute toxicity information: Acute oral taking of LD50(mg/kg): 1800 ((via the mouth of rat).

Transportation Information:

Packing category: To be packed in accordance with non-dangerous goods category.
Packing methods: To be packed by using Al, SS, galvanized iron drums or plastic drums, or to be stored and transported by using tank cars and tankers in accordance with the regulations on flammable goods.
Points of attention for transportation: Prior to transportation, check firstly if the packing vessels are complete and sealed. During transportation, make sure that the vessels do not leak, collapse, fall down, and are not damaged. It is forbidden to load and transport this product by mixing with strong acids, strong alkaline, strong oxidants, strong reducing agents, edible chemicals and etc. When transported by ship, the product shall be isolated from the positions of engine room, power supply, fire source and etc.
