The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes NMP as a developmental toxicant. in 2017, the EPA proposed banning the chemical for paint stripping, but later shelved the proposal under pressure from industry and formally withdrew NMP in 2021. In the meantime, if you need to remove paint or coatings, make sure to avoid NMP and other toxic chemicals such as methylene chloride.
